"Dress" Rehearsal and Concert Information! PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!
Good morning,
The concerts are quickly approaching! PLEASE read all of the information in this e-mail carefully!! I have also posted it on the Chorus page of the website.
"Dress" REHEARSALS:
We will have 2 morning "dress" rehearsals during the concert weeks. Students DO NOT have to wear their concert attire- it is a "dress" rehearsal because it will be in the gym on the risers and our piano accompanist will be joining us for the first time. That being said, it is VERY IMPORTANT that your child attend these reherasals - it is the only time they will know where they belong on the risers and the only opportunity for us to rehearse with our live piano accompaniment!!
These rehearsals are:
MONDAY, November 28, 8am in the gym
MONDAY, December 5, 8am in the gym
CONCERT ATTIRE:
Solid white on the top, solid black on the bottom with dark-colored shoes.
This can be in the form of a dress, shirt and skirt, or shirt and pants.
Long or short-sleeved is up to you- it gets mighty cozy up there with all of us standing together, so please keep that in mind! I would lean AWAY from a thick sweater!
In addition, please avoid athletic wear (sweatshirts, t-shirts, sweatpants, sneakers) AND high-heeled shoes- we do not want to compromise the safety of our singers.
For our final piece, "Ugly Sweater", students are encouraged to bring an "ugly" holiday sweater to wear if there is one laying around at home! Students who sing Part 2 will wear their ugly sweater for the entire last song, and students who sing Part 1 will put theirs on at the end of the song! (We'll talk about those logistics during rehearsal :) )
CONCERTS:
Thursday, December 1 at 6pm
Tuesday, December 6 at 6pm
--> Chorus singers are expected to attend BOTH concerts, regardless of track.
--> If you have a younger child in Grades K or 1, their performances will only occur on ONE of those two nights- you should have received another e-mail from me forwarded home by your child's classroom teacher- if you didn't, the information is on the website (www.ocemusic.weebly.com)
Chorus students should arrive at 5:30pm on both nights to the Music Room and I will direct them from there. They may want to bring a book or quiet game, as they will be expected to quietly rest their voices while the younger students are performing before them.
ACCOMPANIST DONATION:
I need 1 parent volunteer to collect any donations for our volunteer accompanist outside the Music Room on the night of our FIRST concert, December 1. Barbara Vinal works at Oak Grove in Raleigh, but LOVES working with the OCE Chorus so much that she graciously donates her time and energy to learning our music, and attending both "dress" rehearsals and concerts so the students can experience singing with a live pianist. Even if each family gave $1, we would be able to present her with a token of our appreciation! The parent volunteer would collect and count the donations from that evening, and then I will purchase a gift to be presented at our second concert on December 6.
Please reach out with any questions! We look forward to sharing this music with you!!

Fifth Grade Families Only- Honors Chorus Info
Good morning!
While the concerts are quickly approaching, I wanted to let our fifth grade chorus families know about the extra-curricular opportunity to participate in Wake County's Honors Chorus.
Honors Chorus is a great opportunity for students who want an extra challenge in learning and performing challenging music and want to partake in the social aspect of singing with over 110 students from around the county in a weekend concert conducted by a reknown conductor.
Honors Chorus (also sometimes called All-County Chorus) will take place on Friday, February 24th and Saturday, February 25 at East Millbrook High School in Raleigh. Parents are responsible for transportation for this event, but most carpool to make it easier! I have e-mailed you the rehearsal schedule so you can see if it fits in with your family's schedule. Students are required to attend all of the rehearsals to participate in the concert.
There is a $31.25 fee for a student to participate in Honors Chorus, which covers copies of the music that the student gets to keep, as well as funds the clinician/conductor for the weekend. Please contact me if this is of concern- we do NOT want cost to be a barrier to this experience!
Due to the size of Wake County, each participating school can bring 4 students to participate in Honors Chorus. If your child is interested in participating, I will hold a morning rehearsal to sing through the music with any students who would like to join. From this sing-through, I will choose 4 students based on how confidently they participate and their comfort in learning and singing small passages of music within the group (matching pitch, etc.). This morning rehearsal will be on Thursday, December 15 for all students, regardless of track. I would like to have these students chosen and music and practice tracks disseminated so they can practice the music over the holiday break!
Please e-mail me if you have any further questions regarding this awesome opportunity!!

Take a Listen to our Concert Songs!
Hello!
I've created a YouTube playlist of our concert songs so you can keep them in your ears! The versions are NOT exact- we will be doing some different things with the songs BUT the melodies are the same, so you can keep them in your ears even if it's not a Wednesday morning! Happy Listening!

Hello!

Please read the information below and if you think this is a good match for your child, you can sign them up using the link below! Registration will close August 12.
What is Clipper Chorus?
Clipper Chorus before-school opportunity for 4th and 5th grade students to learn challenging music in a variety of styles and languages in a large group of singers, and then perform that music for family and friends. We will learn about healthy singing techniques and build our musical independence while having fun! There will be opportunities for small-group singing and even instrument playing in Chorus!
When is Clipper Chorus?
Clipper Chorus is held each Wednesday morning from 8:00 (sharp!) to 8:45 in the Music Room. A bi-monthly schedule is e-mailed home and posted to the website.
What is expected of me as a member of Clipper Chorus?
Singers are expected to be present at all rehearsals and December concerts (except during track out… but you can come if you want to!), ready to take risks, sing expressively, learn something new, and develop and appreciation for the art and excitement of making music with others!
Anything else I should know?
Clipper Chorus is a commitment. If you commit to being a part of our team at the beginning of the year, you are expected to remain an active member through our December concerts. An active members is one who sings expressively, asks questions, demonstrates curiosity, and comes willing to try new things!

- blue or green shirts or dresses (any shade will do!)
- neutral colored- pants/tights/leggings (black, brown, grey, navy)

Final Practice Track- "Wonder"!
We are adding an upbeat concert closer! The song is called "Wonder" by Emeli Sande. You may recognize her name- she sang the song "Next to Me," which was popular last year. Below is the original song, lyrics, instrumental version we will be singing with, and the practice tracks for part 1 and part 2. Happy singing!
Lyrics:
I can beat the night, I'm not afraid of thunder
I am full of light, I am full of wonder
Whoa, oh I ain't falling under
Whoa, oh I am full of wonder
Though our feet might ache,
the world's upon our shoulders
No way we goin' break,
'cause we are full of wonder
Whoa, oh I ain't falling under
Whoa, oh I am full of wonder
This light is contagious, go, go tell your neighbors
Just reach out and pass it on (4x)
Whoa, oh we ain't falling under
Whoa, oh we are full of wonder

Spring Chorus Registration and Rehearsals
Happy New Year, everyone!
If you have not yet signed your student up for Spring Chorus, you can do so here
We will be starting rehearsals this week for our Spring Concert!
Just like the Winter Concert, the Spring Concert will take place on TWO nights for Chorus students- Tuesday, April 19 and Thursday, April 21, both again at 6pm in the gym. Since these concerts fall during the week of Earth Day, many of our songs will have to do with the conservation and appreciation of the natural wonders of our planet.
Here is the rehearsal schedule for January and February. Please look carefully at the end of January, as it is different due to my track out.
Please reach out with any questions! Looking forward to getting back into rehearsals with your musicians!
Best,
Andrea Perrone

FINAL Rehearsal and FINAL Winter Concert!
12/5/15
Hi, all!
I am so excited about how our first performance went last Thursday! Thank YOU for being there to support your students and KUDOS to your kids for putting on a great show! I am continually impressed by what they are able to do.
We will meet in the gym Monday morning for 1 final rehearsal with our accompanist as we welcome back our Track 2 folks for our 2nd concert. It is important that all students attend this rehearsal and Wednesday's final concert- we want the same FULL, FABULOUS sound we had last week to grace the stage again!
Due to the success of concert #1, we will NOT be having rehearsal on Tuesday morning! Just rehearsal on Monday, and the concert on Wednesday! Students will arrive again at 5:30 to the same room wearing the same colors!
Info will be coming out shortly about signing your child up for SPRING Chorus! :)
Thanks!

Rehearsal Update and CONCERT ATTIRE!
HI!
Rehearsal for the week of 11/9 will be a COMBINED grades 4 and 5 rehearsal on THURSDAY 11/12 in the Music Room! The more time together, the merrier- it's crunch time!
CONCERT ATTIRE:
Solid white on the top, solid black on the bottom with dark-colored shoes.
Please steer away from athletic wear (sweatshirts, t-shirts, sweatpants, sneakers) AND high-heeled shoes- we do not want to compromise the safety of our singers.
If your child has a holiday "accessory" (necklace, gloves, hat, etc.), they will be invited to wear it for our final piece. Please keep in mind that there are many students on the risers and we want to be sure we're not blocking anyone from being seen from the audience with our festive accessories :)

Solid white on the top, solid black on the bottom with dark-colored shoes.
- This can be in the form of a dress, shirt and skirt, or shirt and pants.
- Long or short-sleeved is up to you- it gets mighty cozy up there with all of us standing together, so please keep that in mind!

FOCUS DAY info for extra playing/singing opportunities!
10/8/2015
Hi!
I told the students today about 2 out of 3 small group opportunities that will take place in our pieces for the Winter Concert. There will be a glockenspiel playing part in our German piece "Gute Nacht" and both a tambourine and small-group singing opportunity (10 students) in our Chanuka song "S'Vivon."
If students are interested in trying any of these small-group opportunities, they must come to an extra added rehearsal on MONDAY 10/19 at 8am in the Music Room. I do not want to take up full-group rehearsal time to go through these parts and want to be sure I am giving as much 1-on-1 help to these interested musicians as I can.
Due to our Chorus being smaller this year, I will need to cap the small-group signing opportunity at 10 students so that the other 2 parts (Hooray for 3 part harmony!) have enough singers and the parts are balanced. There will be 4 tambourine players and 4 glockenspiel players for the other opportunities (so instruments don't overpower singers :) )
Please let me know if you have any questions!
We learned all but 4 little measures of ALL of our concert music today! We are WELL on our way to a great show!

With a corncob pipe and button nose
And two eyes made out of coal.
Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale they say
He was made of snow, but the children know
How he came to life one day.
There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found
For when they placed it on his head
Part 1- he began --> Part 2 - he began
To dance around
Part 1- Oh Frosty the snowman was alive (part 2- he was alive as he can be)
And the children say he could laugh and play
Just the same as you and me.
Here comes Suzy Snowflake
Dressed in a snow white gown
Tap, tap, tappin' at your windowpane
To tell you she's in town.
Here comes Suzy Snowflake
Soon you will hear her say
Come out everyone and play with me
I haven't long to stay
If you wanna make a snowman
Part 2- I'll help you make one, 1, 2 3
If you wanna take a sleigh ride
Part 1- Wee! The ride's on me
Here comes Suzy Snowflake
Look at her tumblin' down
Bringing joy to every girl and boy
Suzy's come to town.
Hot, hot, OH we got it
Hot, hot HEY we got it
Hot, hot SAY we got it
....Hot chocolate!
Hot, hot, OH we got it
Hot, hot SO we got it
Hot, hot YO we got it

December Concert Dates!!
Concert dates are IN!
There are 2 performances. The first two weeks of December are busy with performances at all of the area schools- I tried to avoid conflicts as best as could. Students are expected to be at both performances regardless of track. I really value the chance to perform twice, as students are able to evaluate their first performances and we can make changes as a group to give the best possible performance on the second evening. In addition, having all singers there helps be sure the sound is balanced and full!
The 2 dates are:
Thursday, December 3 at 6pm
Wednesday, December 9 at 6pm
Additional information (where to be, what to wear, etc.) will come as the dates approach.
Excited to start digging deeper into music with our singers! :)

Welcome Back! Clipper Chorus 2015-2016!
Welcome Back!
I’m very excited to begin the year making choral music with our students! Clipper Chorus is a before-school singing opportunity open to committed singers in 4th and 5th grade. Clipper Chorus will focus on healthy sound production and musicality and artistic expression, as well as reinforce the academic concepts of musical literacy that are explicitly taught in the general music classroom.
In Clipper Chorus, we sing a variety of music including traditional folk music, holiday tunes, songs in various languages from around the world, and music from many different time periods and cultures that highlight many different musical styles.
This year, students will have the opportunity to commit to only Fall Chorus, only Spring Chorus, or both. Sign ups for Spring Chorus will be posted after our Winter Concert; this isn’t a decision you need to make now!
Rehearsals take place on Wednesday mornings for 4th graders and Thursday mornings for 5th graders. All rehearsals begin promptly at 8am in the Music Room.
Sign ups for Fall Chorus will take place at Open House as well as electronically via e-mail through a Google Form that will be e-mailed to you. You can access the Google Form here.

Answers to FAQ:
Attendance/Absence
- Your child is expected to “sign in” at each rehearsal, as to not waste time calling roll.
- If your child misses 3 rehearsals, I will e-mail you to check in.
- If your child cannot attend their regularly schedule rehearsal day due to an appointment, tutoring, etc., they are welcome to come to the other grade’s rehearsal day that week.
Communication
- I will send out weekly reminders about rehearsals and I will update the website with any information sent in the e-mail (www.ocemusic.weebly.com/chorus.html)
Concerts
- There are 2 Winter concerts- attendance is expected at both, regardless of your track. We want to make sure we are producing a consistent, cohesive sound!
- Concert dress will be communicated to you as time approaches.
Focus Days
- Focus Days will be implemented as needed to complete a certain task- if there are small group descant or instrumental opportunities in our pieces, I will hold an extra Monday morning rehearsal to audition those parts, as to not waste full-rehearsal time. Dates for these will be communicated via e-mail.
- Practice tracks
- I create practice tracks for students so they may practice at home, during track outs, or whenever they feel like singing! Please, please utilize these resources- having a Chorus on a year-round schedule is challenging! They can be accessed at the website listed above.
Schedule
- Please keep the schedule handy and refer to it weekly- some weeks have slight changes due to my track outs, holidays, school closures, etc.
Track outs
- If your child comes to rehearsal during track out (yay!), I will walk them out to the front of the building where they can be picked up.
- Attendance during track out is not required, but is encouraged,
- There will not be rehearsal when I am tracked out (Track 3).
